Dear students,

we build ourselves a digital office. You can find it here https://gather.town/app/tOdDWZR6K4E4MHTR/MoSi

This is a so-called gather and should simplify interaction. It works as follows:

  • Moving in gather can be done by using the arrow keys. Talking to others is only enabled to persons who are virtually near you!
  • Interacting with whiteboards, documents, etc can be done via the X – key.
  • All Offices are private spaces. That means within an office, one can always hear all other users within that office, independent of the distance within that room, but no users outside from the office (and vice versa).
  • All meeting tables (blue) are also private spaces.
  • In the Students working room is the area exactly in front of each table a private room.
  • The red-colored rooms/area are zoom tables and enable a seamless connection to a Zoom meeting (which generally has a better audio and video quality).

We try to follow this working procedure:

  • While we are working at home, we are online in the gather. When not working actively in the gather, one can of course deactivate microphone and camera.
  • When we are actively working (e.g. reading, implementing…) the availability is set to green or yellow (basically the same, just different behavior considering camera/microphone)
  • If we are not available for a short period of time, e.g. coffee break, we set the availability to red. Thus, the others now that the person is not here.
  • If we are gone for a longer time (e.g. lecture, external zoom-meeting, private appointment), we just log out of the gather – like in reality, the person is just not here.
  • On every used desk (for students as soon as they claimed one) is placed a document. When someone wants to talk to you when you were not available, they can leave a note. Or vice versa – you can leave a note when you’ll be back etc.

We are hoping to simulate a pre-pandemic everyday working environment. We encourage you to use the gather, especially to communicate with your fellow students.

See you at gather!

Group Seminar

This is the site containing all information about the Bachelor/Master seminar of the Modeling and Simulation group.

We will add upcoming talks and also notify you as soon as a new talk is scheduled. The current default slot is Wednesday, 10.15 am.

Law and Order

To pass the seminar, you have to attend at least six talks. As long as you are working on your thesis, we assume that you attend all talks. If you have an urgent reason for not attending, please let us know in advance. Shortly after your proposal talk, you have to register your thesis.

Proposal Talk

Your proposal talk will be held as soon as you accomplished the first insights/results of your topic. It should last about 25 minutes and include

  • the most important basics of your topic,

  • the most important algorithms/theoretical approaches you plan to use,

  • a short glimpse of your work/your first results.

This proposal talk will be graded as your Bachelor/Master seminar. In addition to the talk, you need to submit a proposal paper.

Proposal Paper

Unless otherwise agreed, this proposal paper is due on the same day of your presentation. The proposal paper should cover a short introduction into your topic, including its research background. Your paper should:

  • Contain a description of your problem.

  • Include a discussion of related work.

  • Sketch what you plan to work on.

  • Especially state, what your thesis will cover and what not.

Final Talk/Colloquiums Talk

Your final talk will be held as soon as you finished writing your thesis. It should last about 30 minutes and include

  • a short summary about the basics/algorithms/theoretical approaches that you used,

  • a detailed description of what you have done,

  • a detailed presentation of your results.

This final talk will be your Bachelor/Master thesis colloquium.

Further Conditions:

  • Unless otherwise agreed, you must send a first version of your slides to your supervisor one week before your talk at the latest. If you wish to receive detailed feedback, we advise you to do that even earlier.

  • After your talk, you must send the final version of your slides to your supervisor. The slides will then be published under materials for your fellow students.
