Dear students,

you can now find the results of the main exam on your Personal Status page. The exam inspection will take place on Wednesday the 24th of July in E1.3 Room 328 from 10 am to 12 am.

We set the number of minimal points for passing the exam to 40, which was close to the average number of points achieved (including no-show-ups and early-leavers).

The exams are oriented towards the Exercise Sheets and not towards the Quizzes. It is important to practice the application of the concepts additional to the theoretical knowledge about them. Our impression is that many students with <60 points could perform much better with more preparation time.
We would like to support those who want to improve their grade through the re-exam and will make additional offers for preparation end of September. Furthermore, if you have questions during your preparation, don’t hesitate to drop by at Alex’ and Timo’s offices.

Dear students,

you now find the results of the fourth quiz and of the third bonus exercise on your Personal Status page. The playlist with the videos for next Wednesday, as well as new chapters of the lecture notes are now online and can be found under Materials.
Note that since some answers in question 3 were unintentionally mean and there were some typos in the lecture notes concerning the same topic, we "discarded" question 3 from the test, i.e., each of you got the 2 points for this question, independent of the answers given.  Also, for the web-surfer question we accepted two solutions (for alpha=1/3 and 1-alpha=1/3) as the meaning of alpha and 1-alpha is easily mixed up.

On your Personal Status page you find the possibility to upload the current bonus exercise. You are allowed to work in groups of at most 3 people. Please make sure that only one person of your team submits the exercise and that the name and matriculation numbers of all team members are written on top of your sheet.

The presentation of the fourth exercise sheet, including the bonus exercise, will take place next week on Monday the 20th of May in E2.1 Room 0.01. The solutions of the exercise sheets will be available under Materials afterwards.

Since there are no direct conflicts with other exams, we fixed the exam date to the 17th of July (usual lecture time slot 10:00 to 12:00). The exact starting time, duration and room number(s) for the exam will be announced soon.

Also note that we found a larger room for the Wednesday group in building E1.7, SR 008. The new room is SR 001 in the same building. If you don't find the new room (001), you can go to the old one (008) to be picked up there.

Dear Students,

the playlist with the videos for next Wednesday is now online. Please, watch the videos to be prepared for next Wednesday. While in earlier years we used Matlab for programming and visualization, we now decided to use mostly Python for this iteration. The lecture notes and the videos will still contain examples in Matlab code. However, we recommend that you become familiar with Python as it is one of the most important languages in the area of stochastic modelling and statistics as well as for machine learning. We will adapt the videos and lecture notes at some point.
On the next exercise sheet, we will have some programming exercises (mostly plotting of distributions). To solve the exercises with Python, you can either use some online programming platform, like Colaboratory, or install Python on your laptop. We also recommend using Jupyter Notebook to organize your projects. Please make sure that your programming setup is ready for next Wednesday and bring Laptops or Tablets with you (one per group).
Note that the quick test covers only the videos and not the plotting of distributions using Python.

Dear students,

we uploaded some statistics about the calibration test from the first lecture under Materials. As some of you had problems with the basics of probability theory, we recommend you to watch the recap videos (you can also find them under Materials). As there are many videos, especially prepare the topics you had problems with. We will also offer an extra tutorial on Monday about the basics of probabilities and random variables. We will announce the room on Sunday  evening when we know the total number of participants.

Furthermore you can now find the preparation video for the first lecture in the Materials section. This week covers just a small number of videos, giving you some time to work on the recap.

Probabilistic Models and Data Analysis

Objectives:
The aim of this course is to give students of bioinformatics and computer science a solid background in probability and statistics as well as detailed knowledge about computer simulation of stochastic models, parameter estimation and hypothesis testing. Students will also learn how to use software tools such as R and Matlab to analyze data and probabilistic models. This course is a flipped classroom course, which means that the two lecture/tutorial slots will be used for exercises/examples/questions and discussion of the material and participants have to prepare for these slots by either watching videos or reading the lecture notes.

Prerequisites:
The course is open to students from bioinformatics and computer science. Mathematical skills as well as basic programming skills are of advantage but not mandatory. For the following topics, we have material (notes, videos) for revision.

  • Events and their probabilities
  • Rules of probability
  • Combinatorics
  • Conditional probability and independence
  • Distribution of a random variable
  • Expectation and variance

Regulations:

  • Every Wednesday, beginning on April 17th, there will be a quick test at 10:05 to check for preparation.
  • These tests check whether you dealt with the video materials but do not examine deep understanding of the content.
  • To pass a single test, you need at least 50 % of the points.
  • For admission to the exam, you need to pass all except two tests.
  • If you don't show up without good reasons (e.g. a certificate of illness), the test is rated as a failure.
  • Bonus: The weekly exercise sheet will contain at least one exercise marked as "hand-in or present". Handing-in/presenting at least 6 such exercises correctly gives you a 0.3 bonus for your final grade.
  • You can hand in one such exercise per week.
  • You are allowed to work in groups with at most 3 people.

Python:
As a part of the assignments, the participants will have to program in Python.
We also recommend organizing your projects in a Jupyter Notebook.

Syllabus:

  • PART I – SHORT REVIEW OF PROBABILITY AND RANDOM VARIABLES
  • PART II – COMPUTER SIMULATIONS AND STOCHASTIC PROCESSES
    • Simulation of random variables
    • Monte Carlo methods
    • Markov chains
    • Hidden Markov models
  • PART III – INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS AND STATISTICAL INFERENCE
    • Simple descriptive and graphical statistics
    • Parameter estimation: Maximum Likelihood, Bayesian Inference, …
    • Confidence intervals
    • Hypothesis testing
    • Multiple Testing

Text Books:

  • Probability and Statistics for Computer Scientists, Michael Baron, Taylor & Francis, 2013
  • Simulation Modelling and Analysis. Averill M. Law, Mcgraw-Hill, 2006.
  • Introduction to the Numerical Solution of Markov Chains. William J. Stewart, Princeton Univ. Pr., 1994.
